The Essence of Sound

It is believed that there are two types of sound: one is the vibration of the ether, and the other is the vibration of the air.

The vibration of the ether, which cannot be perceived by physical senses, is the principle of all manifestation and the foundation of all matter; it is regarded as the "Music of the Spheres." It forms permanent numerical patterns that serve as the basis for the world's existence. This type of vibration is not produced by physical impact like audible sound. Therefore, it is called Anahata ("the unstruck").

The other sound is the temporary vibration of the air, an image (reflection) of the ethereal vibration. It is audible and is always created by an impact. Therefore, it is called Ahata ("the struck").
