The Nature of Sound. It is believed that there are two kinds of sound: one is the vibration of the ether, and the other is the vibration of air.
The vibration of the ether, which cannot be perceived through physical sensation, is the principle of all manifestation, the foundation of all matter, and is regarded as the “music of the spheres.” It forms permanent numerical patterns and serves as the basis for the existence of the world. This kind of vibration is not produced by physical impact, as audible sound is. Therefore, it is called Anāhata — “the unstruck” or “unstruck sound.”
The other kind of sound is the temporary vibration of air, which is an image, or reflection, of the vibration of the ether. It is audible and is always produced by impact. Therefore, it is called Āhata — “the struck” or “struck sound.”
